What you will see

The Meteora valley in Thessaly, central Greece

Sandstone rock formations up to 400 metres high, topped by six active Orthodox monasteries.

UNESCO World Heritage Site · Natural Wonder

The Rock Formations

The sandstone pillars of Meteora rise up to approximately 400 metres above the Plain of Thessaly and were formed over millions of years through a combination of geological uplift, erosion, and earthquake activity. The word Meteora comes from the Greek for “suspended in air” and the name describes the experience accurately.

The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, recognised both for its natural geological significance and for the extraordinary cultural heritage of the monasteries built on top of it. The scale of the landscape is difficult to convey in photographs and tends to exceed expectations on first sight.

Six Active Monasteries · Perched on stone pillars

The Monasteries

There are six active monasteries at Meteora: the Great Meteoron (Megalo Meteoro), Varlaam, Roussanou, St. Nicholas Anapafsas, Holy Trinity (Agia Triada), and St. Stephen. The Great Meteoron is the largest and oldest, housing three historically significant chapels and a library containing rare Byzantine manuscripts alongside ancient texts of Homer and Aristotle.

Not all monasteries are open every day, as each follows its own schedule for religious observance. Your driver will confirm which are open on your chosen date and plan the visits accordingly. Most visitors have time to see two to three monasteries within the available window. A dress code applies: long trousers for men, covered shoulders and knees for women.
